CSD Group Australia receives High Commendation for modular Student Accommodation project

July 26, 2018

CSD Group Australia last week received High Commendation at the 2018 Australia Steel Institute (ASI) New South Wales (NSW) & Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Steel Excellence Awards for its Charles Sturt University (CSU) Student Accommodation project. The development is a series of 14 innovative modular multi-storey buildings that were constructed.

Organised by ASI, the awarding ceremonies were held in Sydney 20 July 2018, and showcased Australia’s best steel engineering and steel construction projects in the last year.

CSD Group did the steel detailing and building information modelling (BIM) management for the project, which consisted of 570 self-contained rooms, common lounges, kitchens, laundry rooms and student hubs. To make the design replicable, 26 different module types were designed and detailed using Tekla and Trimble.

The project’s initial challenges – fabrication, interface and buildability errors and clashes – were addressed by CSD Group’s BIM management team just as the production for materials was about to commence. With the timely intervention, manufacture of items was stopped, errors were corrected, and the delivery of incorrect items to the workshop for assembly was avoided. At the CSU Port Macquarie, NSW site, the modular buildings and staircases were delivered and erected with no clashes and no problems. A brief case study on the project may be viewed on CSD BIM capabilities.

The CSU Student Accommodation project team consists of Intelligent Building Systems International (IBSI) as the Project Managers and Designers; Graeme Moulston & Associates Engineering; Eastern States Engineering; Modulexc Australia; and CSD Group.

The ASI NSW & ACT Steel Excellence Awards is offered every two years and is “designed to highlight the high standards of design and execution achievable with steel as the prime building material. They showcase the versatility of steel and the Australian steel industry’s capabilities.”

Congratulations to all entrants and finalists and thank you to ASI for putting on a great night for all!
